Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia or Idiopathic Headshaking

Neuralgia = pain at the nerve endings, usually induced by a disturbed "food" supply of a nerve

 

Idiopathic simply means the cause could not be identified. 

All Headshaking horses which do not suffer under Seasonal or Photic HS;
which do show the clinical symptoms are categorized under the term Idiopathic
and which were examined and causes like vertebras misalignment, teeth problems, ear mites or similar were excluded,
and were it is obvious that the trigeminal nerves is involved.

Examples of idiopathic HS:

wind, rain drops, snow flakes, allergies, cold weather, warm temperatures and accidents without diagnosed changes of the spinal cord or surrounding ligaments can trigger attacks.
